Online Course Outline Prompt Template

Design the structure of an online course with modules, lessons, learning objectives, and engagement activities.

The Prompt

ROLE: Online course strategist and instructional designer who has built courses generating over $1M in revenue and achieving 80%+ completion rates — because a course that doesn't get finished is a course that doesn't change anyone's life, regardless of the quality of the content. CONTEXT: A creator, educator, or business is designing an online course and needs a structure that delivers genuine transformation, keeps students engaged to the end, and is realistic to produce. Most online courses fail because they're too long (creators confuse comprehensiveness with quality), lack a clear transformation arc, or don't build community and accountability into the structure. The best courses have a strong "before/after" transformation premise and deliver it in the fewest modules necessary. TASK: Design the complete structure for an online course on the topic, for the audience, and at the duration specified in the EDITABLE VARIABLES. RULES: • The course title must communicate transformation, not just topic ("Go From X to Y" or "The [Specific Outcome] System" beats "[Topic] Masterclass") • Every module must have a clear deliverable — something the student produces or achieves before moving to the next module • Module 1 must be completable in under 30 minutes and deliver an early win — this is the critical engagement point that determines completion • Include community and accountability touchpoints at weeks 1, 3, and end — these are the most evidence-backed completion rate boosters • The sales page headline must be built around the specific transformation, not the creator's credentials CONSTRAINTS: No module should exist purely to cover content — every module must move the student closer to the transformation promise. Maximum 8 modules for the core content (more than 8 has dramatically lower completion rates). The Module 1 full outline must be detailed enough to produce immediately. EDITABLE VARIABLES: • [COURSE_TOPIC] — the specific skill or knowledge area (be precise) • [TARGET_AUDIENCE] — who this course is for (specific: not "entrepreneurs" but "freelance designers who want to raise their rates") • [TRANSFORMATION_PROMISE] — the before/after: student goes from [X] to [Y] • [COURSE_DURATION] — total course length (hours of content) • [DELIVERY_FORMAT] — video lessons, live cohort, text-based, hybrid • [PRICE_POINT] — the price (affects expected depth and production quality) OUTPUT FORMAT: Course Title Options (3 transformation-focused alternatives) Course Tagline (the transformation in one sentence) Module Outline (5–8 modules): | Module # | Title | Duration | Learning Objective | Deliverable | Lesson Titles (3–5) | Module 1 — Full Outline: — Lesson 1 structure (learning objective, content, activity, length) — Lesson 2 structure — Early Win Design (what's the module 1 deliverable that creates momentum?) Community & Accountability Touchpoints (what, when, format) Assignment / Project Arc (how assignments build toward the final transformation) Sales Page Headline Options (5 — benefit-focused, not feature-focused) Pre-Launch Waitlist Email Hook (1 subject line + 2-sentence hook) QUALITY BAR: A student who completes module 1 should feel a genuine sense of progress and capability — not just informed, but changed. The overall structure should feel like an inevitability: given that module 1 delivers X, module 2 must exist to address the natural next question. Every module earns its place.

Why this prompt works

Module 1 completion is the single most predictive variable for overall course completion — if a student doesn't finish the first module, they almost never finish the course. Designing module 1 to deliver an 'early win' (a quick, tangible result) activates completion momentum and justifies the decision to purchase.

Tips for best results

  • The transformation promise is your north star — every module should be a step toward it, and any content that doesn't move the student closer to that transformation should be cut or moved to a bonus section
  • Beta-test module 1 with 3–5 people from your target audience before building the rest of the course — their confusion points will reshape your entire structure and save weeks of rebuilding later
  • A completion rate above 30% is genuinely excellent for self-paced courses — design for that reality by making modules short, deliverables concrete, and wins frequent, rather than designing for an idealised student who watches everything
  • The 'deliverable per module' rule is the most powerful course design principle: students who produce something tangible at the end of each module have a 40% higher completion rate than those who only watch content
  • Ask the AI to generate a 'student journey map' alongside the outline — what the student is thinking, feeling, and experiencing at each stage. This reveals the emotional design of the course, not just the content design
