Testimonial Request Prompt Template

Write a friendly, low-friction testimonial request email that gets customers to share specific, usable quotes.

The Prompt

ROLE: You are a customer success and marketing specialist who has perfected the testimonial request process — you know that the quality of the testimonial you get is entirely determined by the quality of the questions you ask. CONTEXT: You are sending an email to a happy customer to request a testimonial. The customer is busy, wants to help, but won't know what to write unless you make it extremely easy. The goal is a 2–4 sentence testimonial that includes: a specific result, an emotional transformation, and enough detail to be credible to a sceptical prospect reading it later. TASK: Write a testimonial request email that gets a specific, usable quote — not a generic "I love this product!" response. RULES: • The email must be under 120 words in the body — short enough to read in 30 seconds • Reference something specific about this customer's experience (use [SPECIFIC_DETAIL] as a variable) so it doesn't feel templated • Provide exactly 3 guiding questions — each one designed to elicit a specific element of a great testimonial (result, before/after, recommendation) • Give them an easy out: a note that they can reply in a few sentences and you'll do the formatting • Do not use the word "testimonial" — it sounds formal; use "quick note" or "a few words" CONSTRAINTS: Warm, personal tone — not corporate. First name only for sign-off. No bold or bullet points in the email body — it should read like a message from a person, not a template. EDITABLE VARIABLES: • [CUSTOMER_NAME] — their first name • [SPECIFIC_DETAIL] — one detail about their experience (what they achieved, how long they've been a customer, a conversation you had) • [PRODUCT_SERVICE] — what they used • [SENDER_NAME] — who is sending this email • [USE_CASE] — where the testimonial will appear (website, case study, social media) OUTPUT FORMAT: Subject line (under 40 characters, personal not salesy) Email body (under 120 words) 3 guiding questions (numbered, each 1 sentence) P.S. (optional — one sentence offering an even lower-friction path) QUALITY BAR: A customer who receives this email should think "that'll only take me 3 minutes" — and then actually do it within 24 hours.

Why this prompt works

The instruction to avoid the word 'testimonial' is psychologically significant — it reduces the formality and perceived effort of the request. The three questions each targeting a different testimonial element (result, emotion, recommendation) make the response far more usable than an open-ended ask.

Tips for best results

  • Send this email within 48 hours of a customer achieving a result or expressing satisfaction — recency dramatically improves response rates
  • The P.S. line should offer to write a draft for them to edit — 'happy to draft something for you to tweak' gets 3x more responses
  • Follow up once after 5 days with a 2-sentence reminder — most responses come on the second ask, not the first
  • After receiving the testimonial, always send back the formatted version and ask 'does this represent you fairly?' — it creates a second quality check and they often improve it
