Before answering a question, ask the AI to explicitly generate the relevant background knowledge first. This two-step technique — generate knowledge, then answer — consistently improves accuracy on factual, technical, and nuanced questions by making the model's working knowledge visible before it commits to an answer.

Why Pre-Generating Knowledge Improves Answers

When an AI answers a question directly, the relevant knowledge is activated implicitly — the model generates text that is consistent with the statistical patterns it learned during training, without explicitly surfacing which background knowledge it's drawing on. Generated knowledge prompting makes this implicit process explicit: by asking the model to write out relevant facts before answering, you achieve two things. First, you force the model to surface what it knows (and doesn't know) before committing to an answer. Second, the explicit knowledge now appears in the context window, allowing the model to reason more carefully from known facts rather than generating the answer purely from pattern-matching.

The Two-Step Prompt Structure

The technique is simple: split your prompt into two steps. Step 1 — knowledge generation: 'Before answering, write out [N] relevant facts about [topic] that are directly relevant to this question.' Step 2 — answer grounded in generated knowledge: 'Now, using the facts you just listed, answer the question: [question].' The answer in step 2 is grounded in the explicitly stated facts from step 1, which produces more accurate, better-reasoned responses — especially on technical, scientific, or knowledge-intensive questions. The facts in step 1 also serve as a quick sanity check: if any of them look wrong, you can correct them before the answer is built on them.

Controlling Quality in the Knowledge Generation Step

The quality of the final answer depends on the quality of the generated knowledge. To improve it: specify the type of knowledge you need ('focus on mechanisms, not just definitions'), specify the number of facts (more facts = more thorough coverage but more noise), and ask for a confidence flag ('mark any fact where you are uncertain'). The confidence flags are particularly useful — they help you identify which parts of the knowledge base to verify before relying on the answer.

When Generated Knowledge Prompting Is Most Valuable

This technique adds the most value on questions where: accuracy matters more than creativity, the question is knowledge-intensive enough that implicit recall might miss important context, and the domain is one where the model might have inconsistent or sparse training coverage. Medical questions, scientific questions, historical analysis, technical specifications, and legal reasoning all fit this profile. For creative writing, brainstorming, or simple tasks, the technique adds overhead without meaningful accuracy benefit.

Generated Knowledge vs. RAG

Generated knowledge prompting and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) both aim to ground answers in explicit knowledge, but from different sources. RAG retrieves real documents from an external knowledge base — the knowledge is real, verified, and current. Generated knowledge prompting generates knowledge from the model's training — faster and simpler, but subject to the model's knowledge limitations and hallucination risks. For high-stakes factual questions, RAG is superior. For questions where you want to improve reasoning quality and can tolerate some knowledge imprecision, generated knowledge prompting is a useful, zero-infrastructure alternative.
